Resolution

Honoring and Thanking Dawn Monk

for Thirty-Five Years of Dedicated Service

to the Courts and to the People of Michigan

Whereas, the Justices of the Michigan Supreme Court, through the State Court Administrative Office, are responsible to provide administrative direction and guidance to all of our state’s diverse trial courts; and

Whereas, for 35 years, Dawn Monk has been a mainstay in SCAO, from her initial post as a budget analyst, to later becoming manager of budget policy and planning, administrative services director, and ultimately, the first woman to be deputy state court administrator and chief operating officer; and

Whereas, Dawn Monk has proven, time and time again, to be an invaluable and trusted adviser to 12 Chief Justices of our Court and all of the Justices, as well as to hundreds of judges statewide who relied upon her positive, uplifting, and thoughtful guidance; and

Whereas, Dawn Monk has been a dear friend and colleague to eight State Court Administrators and to hundreds of SCAO employees who looked to her for steady leadership, honest answers, and encouragement to be their best in serving the people; and

Whereas, Dawn Monk played a critical role in a wide range of judicial achievements yet never took credit, including the development of problem-solving courts, Michigan Legal Help, Community Dispute Resolution Centers, the Court Equity Fund, juror reimbursement, trial court performance measures, and countless more examples of her hard work; and,

Whereas, Dawn Monk’s prudent and careful management of our budget helped to build the Court’s reputation as a good steward of public resources and the branch of government that never asked for unnecessary things, but only for those things that were needed to make people’s lives better; and,

Whereas, Dawn Monk stepped up to shoulder the burden of budget battles, through furloughs and cuts that tested her unflagging spirit, but never got her down and always kept the judiciary moving forward; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, that we, the Justices of the Michigan Supreme Court, in grateful recognition of Dawn Monk’s service to the courts and to the people, present this resolution highlighting just a fraction of her achievements and offer best wishes upon her retirement.  We have affixed the seal of the Michigan Supreme Court on this day of December 19, Anno Domini MMXIX, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and forty-second year.
